"Up to seventy-five percent of diagnoses are based on laboratory testing. In Tyler, we perform more than 4 million tests a year."

"Are we CSI? No, we don't have these fancy screens that flash back and forth," Patusa said. "But we do have state-of-the-art equipment, computers, and robotics."

We ensure that our instruments are functioning properly through regular calibrations and controls," said Crystal Villarreal, a clinical laboratory scientist with nearly two decades of experience at CHRISTUS Spohn Hosptial in Alice. "This guarantees that the data we provide to doctors is accurate and reliable." 

Their work ensures that doctors can trust the information sent to them when results are needed to make critical decisions about patient care, whether diagnosing leukemia from a blood sample or determining the effectiveness of a treatment. 

"It's more than just testing; it's about understanding the science behind every sample," said Christian Rodriguez, medical laboratory technician at CHRISTUS in Tyler. "We validate every piece of information before it goes out to ensure the care our patients receive is based on the most accurate data."

These programs enable technicians to earn higher degrees, opening doors to advanced roles, including management positions, transitioning from a medical laboratory technician to a clinical laboratory scientist, or specializing in areas like hematology or microbiology.

"We're not just running machines; we're validating results and ensuring every piece of information we send out is correct. It's a responsibility we take seriously because patient outcomes depend on it," Patusa said.

Many people are unaware of how to pursue a career as a medical lab technician, but the pathway is more accessible than they might think.

An associate degree in medical laboratory technology is the minimum requirement for most entry-level lab roles.  

CHRISTUS Health, for instance, supports its Associates in advancing their careers by offering programs that allow technicians to pursue bachelor's degrees or additional certifications in specialized lab fields.

"I used the tuition reimbursement program to earn my associate degree, which allowed me to advance to a technician role where I now operate complex lab machinery," Christian said.

By providing both on-the-job training and educational assistance, CHRISTUS ensures that technicians can continue to grow and take on more advanced roles within the organization. 

"I've been here for almost 20 years, and I've seen how CHRISTUS invests in its people," Crystal said.
